Refinement of design
- Placing the cloud image so that most of the cloud shapes were at the bottom of the design aimed to make them really stand out. However the blue wash over the image makes the bottom half of the image quite moody and not light and bright.
- To make the design brighter and more positive feeling the image was flipped horizontally so that the bluer area of the sky was used in the design. Having fewer clouds in the design created a greater sense of light and airiness, whilst also not detracting from the phrases which are the main focus of the design.
- In the previous design 'yours for longer' and the caption 'long lasting' was written on the back panel. This was taken off the design to make way for the technical information needed for the product. Although the long lasting nature of the product is a key product feature, it was decided that this perhaps wasn't needed to portray the message that the rest of the design was truing to show. The front panel states the energy efficiency / saving qualities of the product, with the other two showing how this benefits the consumer (lower energy bills) and the environment, with the imagery suggesting the effect on the atmosphere (reduced pollution).
- The top of the box similarly uses the same image with the gradient to continue the imagery across the visible aspects of the design.
- Most of the technical information about the product was spread around the box sides so that the consumer engages with the item to find the information, however the most important information for finding the correct light bulb is placed on the front of the package so that it can be seen when placed on the shelf. Extra information was placed on the back of the package with the standardised symbols such as the energy efficiency, bar code and recycling options. On other packaging that was looked at there are diagrams for the size of the bulb and the area coverage of the light. These were remade and coloured using a shade of blue in the rest of the design to help better link it with the imagery and type elsewhere.
- Moving the energy efficiency rating to the left created a natural line for the text to run parallel to, balancing the design out more.
- It was considered that the E27 screw information should be made clear on the front of the packaging as this is the main piece of information consumers look for when searching for the correct light bulb. Placing the text at the top of the design where the white section is, is more successful than placing in on the image as it stands out more on the white making it clearer. A gradient was tried behind the text to make it stand out more on the sky image however this took up too much space and detracted from the image itself. Adding E27 to the word screw at the bottom of the design, allowed the information to be seen and highlighted with the other information without it compromising the layout of the rest of the design.
