OUGD601 - Practical - Research - LED Light Bulb Packaging Designs

LED Light Bulb Packaging Designs

- Use of cardboard and one colour print plays on the traditional aesthetic of sustainability, whist also being cheap, easy to produce and recyclable.
- Design uses speech bubbles with captions within, creating the idea that the lightbulb is talking to the consumer from the shelf.
- Perhaps the combination of the cardboard and black print doesn't allow the design to be as bold as it could be on the shelf if printed on a lighter colour.
- Tone of voice fun, friendly and engaging
- Bold text used to highlight key points / information creating further meaning within the text

- Insect imagery is used to link the product with nature, whilst also creating a luxury feel to the product
- The luxury appearance may put off some people from buying the product however because they may think it is too expensive.

- Light bulbs become part of the insect design through the use of a cut out in the design

- The design uses green and brown reflecting the sustainable aesthetic
- The typography on the lightbulb which is partially outlined links well with the shape of the lightbulb top

- The use of the bird links the product to the environment and nature, whilst the use of the speech bubble from the bird suggests how nature is talking about the product and highlights its environmental qualities.
The product is photographed on the front with also a cut out showing a part of the product within however perhaps this isn't necessary to have both it this way as the texture of the light bulb slightly detracts from the image of the bulb.
- The use of the green coloured background clearly links to the idea of the bulb being more environmentally friendly and efficient however is perhaps a little obvious.
- The type of light that the bulb emits is shown through the use of colour within one corner of the design, with the blues and yellows working well alongside the green to create an environmental feel through colour, with perhaps the yellow reflecting the sun and blue as the sky which ties in with the green which reflects growth and plants.
- Within the heirarachy the amount of lumens and type of bulb are the most prominent highlighting the practical

- The design links the environmental qualities with the light bulb through the colouration of the light bulb graphic which corresponds with the shape of the bulb within. The cut out allows the part of the product to be seen whilst allowing enough space for graphic elements to be used on the packaging.
- The combination of the green and brown creates a classic sustainability aesthetic
- The use of colour and type sizing highlights the 12W as being the most important within the hierarchy however perhaps the 80% energy saver should have been the focus as this is its selling point.
- The packaging form is minimal making it more environmentally friendly by reducing waste and being recyclable, whilst also protecting he light bulb within

- Environmental aspect reflected through illustrative imagery of natural things including the sun, planet, leaves and happy people
- Differing coloured sides creates impact and highlights information.
- Key facts about light bulb placed on one side in a concise way making it easy for the consumer to understand the different qualities of the product
- The use of the brown however is perhaps a little bland and could better reflect the colourful nature of the environment and the energy efficient qualities of the product
- The cut outs on the box are perhaps slightly oddly placed as it does not correspond with outline of the product within

- The use of the bold green in one of the designs works well in conveying the more environmentally friendly qualities of the light bulb in a clear and simple way through colour as this is easily associated by the consumer with sustainability etc.

- Within this design the light bulb shapes are adapted to look like fruit reflecting an environmental aspect, however it is perhaps a little confusing for the consumer as to the link between a light bulb and fruit

- Key information about the product is placed all over the box with differing weights of typography highlighting key aspects including the bulb wattage and emphasising the element of reuse which corresponds with the reusable packaging.
- The packaging is created to enable reuse as a plant pot, over pencil pot making it more environmentally sustainable which is the light bulbs main selling point
- Placing the reusable function of the packaging as the main selling point means that the practical benefits of the light bulb to the consumer are not made clear, which could lead them to not purchasing the product. People are perhaps unlikely to buy a lightbulb because of its packaging's reusable quality.

- The use of a colour gradient for the background makes the design bright and stand out whilst playing on the environmental colours with green linked to growth and yellow the sun. The yellow could also reflect the bright warm glow of the bulb.
- The use of the leaf visually links to growth and the environment which consumers will understand however perhaps it is unclear how specifically the bulb is good for the environment

- The minimal design of the packaging creates a high end luxury, desirable aesthetic
- Placing the light bulb in the centre of  the packaging creates the impression it is lighting up the space, whilst also allows the quality of the glow of the bulb to be shown
- There is no environmental link to the product through the imagery

- The use of the words 'Long, Lasting, Saving' outlines the practical benefits in a clear and simple way whilst the hierarchy within the design allows this type to be the largest and therefore emphasises it to the consumer
 - The wattage of the light bulb is the most prominent on the packaging as this is one of the key bits of information people will be looking for when they go to find a light bulb, with the key practical characteristics of the light bulb shown after this which act as the selling points. These key words summarise the key selling points with the specifics e.g. 87% energy saving written smaller
- The branding is made to stand out through the addition of the white strip at the top
- There is also a conversion table comparing the different types of light bulb which allows consumers to see the link between them all and highlights how LEDs use less watts of energy

- The contrast of the bright green and white is effective in creating a contemporary and bold design
- The black and white image of the leaves with the sun coming through is a more original photographic portrayal of nature which feels more real when compared to other digitally created natural imagery
- Keeping the design simple and spreading it across the net to create a wrap around works effectively
- Both the ecological and economic aspects of the light bulb are highlighted however perhaps do not specifically link to how they do this
- The different light bulb symbols reflect the content to the copy on each side of the packaging which reinforces the idea for each side.

- The contrast between the green and white in the packaging creates high contrast and a fresh and bright feeling to the packaging
- The use of the leaves behind the lightbulb perhaps makes the design a little busy
- The use of the green strip creates an area for key information, however the lumens and bulb type are at the top with the energy saving qualities placed further down, therefore less prominent
- Placing the life span of the light bulb within a circle highlights this information whilst the black contrasts with the rest of the design.
