OUGD501 - The Place of Originality in the Information Age

The Place of Originality in the Information Age from The American Institute of Graphic Arts

When new technologies are introduced there is initially resistance then accomodation, leading to integration into the design practice.
New technologies become extensions of practice and seen as tool for creativity.
Machines allow the hand increased precision and speed making things easier to create although there is an aesthetic cost.
Technologies reproduction abilities have changed how creativity and originality are viewed.
The role of the machine has led to creativity being shown through thinking rather than the hand.
Infinite recall is being created from the machines ability of reproduction.
The machines ability for immense reproduction is creating infinite recall.
Culture is created through memory and forgetfulness, with memory providing context and forgetfulness allowing for originality.
Before technology what could be recalled was the sum of human knowledge.
Memory was originally for the intellect, which made knowledge hard to pass on in its entirety.
All human knowledge was limited to what could be recalled.
Link will be made to an idea even if the creator has forgotten or didn't know.
Infinite recall changes originality forever as originality and derivatives become one.
Creativity may become the process of reworking old ideas.
Technology makes every copy equal to the original.
True originality is rare because of infinite recall, with no forgetting, therefore influencing what we create.
The origin of something will be on a continuum rather than a singular point.
Originality will become an additive process in which old and new combine to make something.
Rather than focussing on originality as an indication of creativity, passion, insight and intrigue will be more important.
Nothing is original.
There is a changing focus in industry on collaboration.
A world of infinite recall is being created, where nothing is forgotten because everything is digitally stored and accessible changing originality forever.
