OUGD501 - Study Task 6 - Research and Discovery Workbook Brief

BA (hons) Graphic Design

Context of practice 2: Practical brief template

Brief title

Aiding idea generation within the Design Process - Workbook Brief

Brief (outline the general aims of the project)

-         Brand and create a workbook to help that will aide the idea generation process through research and discovery
-         The product aims to enable designers to bring together a body of research as a basis for and in support of idea generation
-         The workbook should be applicable to a target audience of designers of different disciplines and skill levels.
-         The research tool will allow for the investigation of a topic / project all in one place
-         The book should encourage discovery around the topic and prompt ways of finding / collecting information
-         It should enable the user to document and collect printed items around the subject
-         The design allows for the immersion in research / inspiration which will act as a basis for idea generation
-         The design should be functional as a working sketchbook / workbook allowing the user to modify and personalise the design, so should not be too restrictive in its form
-         The product should allow designers to use it alongside their design process
-         The design should be cheap to produce so that it can be bought repeatedly for different projects

Background / considerations

Background

-         What is Design Process? Why is it helpful? -  suggests that the stages of Defining the Problem and Collecting information, where information is gathered, provides a basis for inspiration in the Brainstorm and Analyse Ideas Stage of the Design Process. This next stage studies the information and considers how the design could be influenced by it.
-         Idea Generation Techniques among Creative Professionals 2009 -  suggests that within the stage of Idea Generation there is the Idea Generation Model in which inspiration is needed throughout, which includes being immersed in relevant information and reflecting on information. Within the Idea Generation Phase there is a Research phase in which a body of information is collected to help identify possible solutions.
-         In the Double Diamond Model the discover stage is at the beginning of the project where insight is gathered whilst the Define stage includes having an understanding of the Discover stage by asking question of the information and developing a clear brief.

Considerations

-         How can the outcome work within the design process to successfully aide a range of projects?
-         How does idea generation fit within the design process?
-         What other stages are important for the idea generation stage to be successful?
-         What stages are there within the idea generation process?
-         How can idea generation be enhanced?

Deliverables

-         Blog –  All blog posts must be labelled OUGD501 and must document all stages of the project and relating theoretical research
-         6 x Design Boards outlining the project
-         Evaluation of the project
-         Printed Workbook

Mandatory requirements (essential requirements that must be followed)

-         The outcome must work in conjunction with the design process and allow for a thorough discovery of relevant information around a topic
-         The design should allow for adaptation and personalisation making it more suitable for a range of creative processes
-         The design should be appropriate for a range of information collecting including but not restricted to notetaking, photographs, drawing etc
